EC ready for DCC polls, says CEC

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Thursday said the Election Commission is ready to hold the elections to the bifurcated Dhaka city corporations.
“We were ready to hold the election to the Dhaka City Corporation. Now, we are absolutely ready for Dhaka,” the chief election commissioner said.
Rakibuddin was addressing a press conference at the conference room of the Election Commission.
“There is no ground left to halt the elections,” the CEC added.
“As soon as the stay order of the court is withdrawn, we will hold the election,” he said.
The High Court on October 8, 2012 extended its previous stay order on holding the Dhaka city corporation polls by three months (till January 8, 2013), as the authorities neither implemented nor replied to its directives.
The elections to both the north and south city corporations were scheduled for May 24, as announced by the Election Commission on April 9.
Earlier on April 16, following a writ petition, the court had stayed the elections for three months as "the legal procedures" were not carried out beforehand.
On July 23, the court extended the original stay order for three more months.
