20 hurt in villager-cop clash in Sylhet

Twenty people including four cops were injured in a clash between the law enforcers and villagers over arrest of a ‘stalker’ in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet Friday evening.
Harun Ur Rashid Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Golapganj Police Station, said police were forced to fire 17 gunshots in the air, as the villagers attacked them and obstructed them from performing their duties, reports our correspondent in Sylhet.
A clash ensued between the plainclothes police and villagers around 4:30pm when the law enforcers picked one Abdul Basit up at Mirganj bazar on charge of stalking a girl.
The locals kept police confined to the spot and snatched Basit away from them, as they could not identify the cops in plainclothes, the police official said.
On information additional forces of police came and rescued them while the accused managed to flee, he added.

Two hours later, police again came under attack by the locals at Sheikhpur village when they attempted to arrest Basit at his home.
Police fired 17 rounds of gunshots to bring the situation under control and detained Badepasha Union Parishad member Badrul Haque for abetting people in resisting the policemen from arresting Basit, the OC said.
Badrul however claimed that he went to the place of occurrence to control villagers.
Police went to arrest Basit as the brother of the stalking victim sued Basit on Thursday.
But the UP member and others swooped on the lawmen, the OC added.
A fresh case was filed against Badrul and a number of villagers for attacking police, the OC added.
