Dhaka, Nov 5 The spokesperson of opposition BNP on Monday alleged that the government was 'using intelligence agencies' for running a smear campaign against the Gulshan office of his party's Chairperson to confuse people.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, also the Acting Secretary General of the party, said it was a "planed campaign of the ruling party for tarnishing BNP's image".
He made the comments at a press conference held at the party's Naya Paltan office following newspaper reports published on Nov 2 saying that information had been 'smuggled' from the office of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
"Some newspapers have published concocted, strange and false reports about smuggling of information from the office of the BNP Chairperson. We want to make it clear that no digital machines used for passing information were recovered from this office. The reports didn't represent the reality," said Alamgir.
Newspapers reported about retrieving 17 digital machines from the office. They claimed involvement of some office secretaries in the matter.
"It's a drama well-planned and staged by the ruling people for political reasons," Alamgir said.
He reminded journalists of publishing similar reports about Khaleda Zia's previous office, popularly known as Hawa Bhaban, as well as about her political office. "None of the news is true."
"I want to react in the words of the Finance Minister -- all (reports) are rubbish," Alamgir said.
He, however, said no national-level newspaper had published report on the matter.
The BNP spokesperson censured Purbokon, a local daily from Chittagong, for publishing the report.
Alamgir castigated Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan's statement branding a BNP Standing Committee member Razakar, meaning collaborator who helped Pakistan against the independence of Bangladesh.
