Two
centuries by Kieran Powell and Shivnarine Chanderpaul guided West
Indies to post over 300 runs on the opening day of the first Test match
against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Tuesday.Opener Kieran Powell struck a second Test century in his career. He scored 117 off 178 that featured 18 boundaries and one six.
Chanderpaul scored 123 off 195 and Denesh Ramdin 52 off 88 were unbeaten at the crease.
The Carribeans scored 361 losing four wickets after the Day 1.
Gayle's 24-run innings featured two sixes and two boundaries. Bravo scored 14 from 28 balls while Marlon Samuels bagged 16 off 41.
Bangladeshi bowler Sohag Gazi who made his Test debut in the match grabbed three wickets of Gayle, Powell and Bravo while pacer Shahadat Hossain took another.
Earlier, West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and decided to bat at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
The state-owned Bangladesh Television (BTV), satellite TV channels Channel 9 of Bangladesh have been telecasting the match live.
The West Indies cricket team arrived on a month-long tour in Dhaka on November 5 to play a full- fledged series against host Bangladesh.
During the month-long tour, the ICC World T20 winners will play a lone T20, five one-dayers and two Test matches with Bangladesh.
The second and final Test will be played at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna from November 21.
The first and second one-dayers will take place in Khulna on November 30 and December 2 respectively.
The remaining three one-dayers will be held in Dhaka on December 5, 7 and 8 respectively while the lone Twenty20 game will be held on December 10 in the capital.
