Jamaat men clash with cops in Rangpur

50 hurt, locals torch Rangpur Jamaat office, Jamaat-Shibir men hurl cocktails

At least 50 people, including policemen, were injured as the leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami clashed with law enforcers at Jahajcompany intersection in Rangpur city on Tuesday.
Locals first looted the Jamaat office before torching it at the Shapla Chattar intersection following the clash, reports our Rangpur correspondent.
The Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir men also hurled several cocktails during the clash, forcing the law enforcers to fire several rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
The law enforcers also lobbed several teargas shells to quell the clash.
Altaf Hossain, the officer-in-charge of Rangpur Kotwali Police Station, was rushed to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital with severe injuries when the Jamaat and Shibir men hurled cocktails at the police.
The clash ensued around 11:00 in the morning when the Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession at Shapla Chattar protesting Monday's countrywide clash with law enforcers and 'police action' on them, said Rangpur Rab-5 commander Salauddin Alamgir.
When the procession reached near Jahajcompany intersection from a kilometre away, police tried to disperse the unruly procession, triggering the clash that continued for nearly 30 minutes.
The incident of chase and counter-chase also took place during the clash when Jamaat men set fire to a motorbike.
At one stage, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, the Rab official added.
At least 260 people, 54 of them policemen, were injured as Jamaat-Shibir men fought pitched battles with law enforcers in Dhaka and 10 other districts in the country on Monday.
The clashes began as police intercepted the processions that the Jamaat and Shibir activists brought out in the capital and elsewhere, demanding the immediate release of Jamaat leaders, including the nine arrested on war crimes charges.
CHITTAGONG
The Jamaat and Shibir activists on Tuesday vandalised and torched several vehicles at Kazir Dewri intersection in Chittagong following a clash with law enforcers.
The Jamaat-Shibir men at first gathered at the area coming in small groups and later brought out a procession around 1:00pm, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
The clash ensued soon after the procession started as law enforcers tried to disperse them.
At one stage the unruly activists set fire to several vehicles.
There was no immediate report of any detention or casualty.
NOAKHALI
Police filed a case against 46 persons by name and 360 unidentified people on Tuesday on charge of attacking on law enforcers and obstructing them from discharging their duties on Monday, our Noakhali correspondent reports.
Police also arrested 28, out of 46 activists whose names were mentioned in the case, from different parts of the district.

NATORE
Police picked up 10 Jamat-Shibir men including local Ameer of Jamaat town unit Atikur Rahman Russel from separate places of the district Monday night, reports our Natore correspondent.
Eight of them were arrested in Sadar upazila while one each from Shingra and Naldanga upazilas.
Saifuzzaman Faruki, assistant superintendent of police in Natore, said police arrested the Jamaat-Shibir men fearing that they might commit subversive activities.
PABNA
Our Pabna correspondent reports: At least 24 Jamaat and Shibir activists were held during a drive at different areas of the district on Monday night.
The arrestees are sent to jail on Tuesday morning, police said.
Pabna Police Superintendent Jahangir Hossain Matobbar told The Daily Star that they were arrested as the pert of country wide operation.

They were held on suspicion of creating violence, police sources added.
CHAPAINAWABGANJ
Police early Tuesday arrested 19 Jamaat-Shibir activists at five upazilas in Chapainawabganj for their alleged involvement with carrying out destructive activities, our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports.
Ariful Haque, additional superintendent of police said, police arrested six at Sadar upazila and same number at Gomostapur upazila, four at Shibganj upazila, two at Nachole upazila and one from Bholahat upazila.
