Dhaka, Nov 17 Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis was offered consular access immediately but he did not agree to avail it, US Ambassador to Dhaka Dan W Mozena says.
"He was offered consular access immediately but for reasons of his own, he demurred," he told a group of journalists at the Centre for Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in Savar Saturday.
The 21-year-old Nafis was arrested by the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over a bomb plot following a 'sting operation' Oct 17.
He was indicted Nov 16, and if proven guilty, he would face life imprisonment.
Mozena said he was aware of the situation with regard to the Nafis episode as he had been tracking it.
"I am very confident that the judicial system will proceed according to our law," he said.
Political dialogue
The US Ambassador expressed hope that the political leaders would soon find a way forward on how to hold next election in a free and fair manner.
Adding to a recent statement issued by the US embassy, he said: "Violence is not acceptable and in our statement we made it very clear. I believe in dialogue among all political parties."
The embassy in the statement issued Thursday expressed concern over the recent violence in Bangladesh as the Jamaat-e-Islami activists clashed with law enforcers in Dhaka and other cities, and it suggested holding 'dialogue to resolve differences'.
"I believe in freedom of expression of ideas and all parties have a right to express their views, but not through violence," he said
