Dhaka, Nov 5 Jamaat-e-Islami activists demanding release of their leaders jailed pending trial of crimes against humanity on Monday clashed with police in the capital's Motijheel area.
Police fired tear gas while the protesters retaliated by throwing stones and brickbats after the clash broke out at 4:45 pm. During the melee the area between Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and Shapla Intersection in Motijheel turned chaotic.
It was not immediately clear how many people were injured, but at least two policemen were seen being taken to hospital for treatment.
Police detained several protesters from the scene.
Several vehicles including at least five motorcycles were torched at Motijheel during the violence, witnesses said.
