AKM Mosharraf Hossain
The
High Court on Wednesday acquitted former state minister for energy AKM
Mosharraf Hossain and his former wife of a corruption case filed in
1991.The HC bench of Justice Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan delivered the verdict after allowing an appeal filed by Mosharraf and his then wife Zinnat Mosharraf against a lower court judgment.
The now defunct Bureau of Anti Corruption (BAC) filed the case with Motijheel Police Station on January 1, 1991 saying that Mosharraf and Zinnat had misappropriated state money worth Tk 7.07 lakh by using 10 vehicles, six air coolers (AC) and two refrigerators of Bangladesh Chemical and Industries Corporation from 1987-1990 when he was the secretary to the ministry of industries.
The Divisional Special Judge's Court in Dhaka on June 9, 1992 sentenced Mosharraf and Zinnat to two years' imprisonment and also fined them Tk 5 lakh each.
The accused in that year filed an appeal with the HC challenging the lower court verdict. Later, the High Court granted them bail and stayed the lower court verdict.
The HC recently started hearing on the appeal and delivered the verdict today (Wednesday). The Anti-Corruption Commission, which replaced the BAC, moved against the appeal.
The ACC lawyer Adv Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star today that the commission is yet to decide whether it will move an appeal with the Supreme Court against the HC verdict.
