activists attacked a peaceful sit-in organised by the university
teachers association on Monday. The attackers also hurled abusive words at the teachers and beat them up, leaving them injured.
A number of outsiders and several employees of the university reportedly took part in the attack, reports our Kushtia correspondent quoting witnesses.
After the attack, the teachers declared to continue their programme till removal of Vice Chancellor Prof M Alauddin, Pro-VC Prof Kamal Uddin and Treasurer Prof Shahjahan Ali.
The incident took place around 11:30am when around 400 teachers under the banner of IUTA were observing a scheduled sit-in in front of the university administration building demanding removal of the three.
According to campus sources, teachers belonging to several organisations including ruling Awami League backed Bangabandhu Parishad, BNP’s Zia Parishad under the banner of IUTA have been demonstrating since September 8 to press home their demands.
Since then no class and examination is being held at the university.
According to witnesses, a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men led by IU unit President Jahangir Hossain and General Secretary Shamsuzzaman Tuhin entered the campus with a rally at about 11:00am.
A large number of outsiders including cadres of an outlawed party led by one Bikash Ali were also with them, witnesses said.
On the other hand, a group of employees led by Jahangir Alam Shemul known as the supporters of VC and Pro-VC also joined the rally, they added.
Later, they attacked the teachers and also vandalised some chairs and loudspeakers there and tore off the banners of the association.
They hurled abuse at the protesting teachers and beat them up, leaving around 25 teachers injured.
The unruly BCL men also confined the teachers to the administrative building for about an hour.
However, the VC and his deputy were not at their offices at that time. Sources said the VC was in the science building while the pro-VC in the commerce building during the incident.
Of the injured, Dr Baki Billah of Bangla, Dr Mahbubur Rahman of chemistry, Tapan Kumar and Tariquzzaman of information and communication engineering, Dr Sahjahan Mondol of law, Asaduzaman of public finance were given first aid at the university medical centre.
The protesting teachers resumed their sit-in in front of the administrative building after the BCL men left the place around 12:30pm.
In the sit-in, the IUTA leaders urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to resolve the deadlock centring the VC and his deputy and treasurer.
The programme was addressed, among others, by IUTA President Prof Yakub Ali, IU unit Bangabandhu Parishad President Prof Abul Ahsan Choudhury, IUTA General Secretary Prof ASM Tariqul Islam, Prof Mahbubur Rahman, Prof Sahjahan Mondol, Prof Mainur Rahman and Prof Alinur Rahman.
According to sources, the stalemate erupted after a university syndicate meeting on September 7 appointed 132 teachers including VC’s daughter and other staff against 76 posts.
Massive irregularities were alleged in the recruitment process.
BCL and Bangabandhu Parishad then demanded cancellation of the entire recruitment process.
Later, the IUTA in a written statement declared the university VC, pro-VC and treasurer unwanted on the campus on October 2. The IUTA also put a six-point demand including immediate removal of the trio.
The IUTA also threw a series of programmes to press home their demands.
