Dhaka court on Wednesday placed three officials of fire-devastated
Tazreen Fashion Ltd on a five-day remand in a case filed for the deaths
of 111 workers in a devastating fire at the factory.Ashulia police Wednesday night arrested the officials -- Md Dulal Uddin, 37, administrative officer; Md Hamidul Islam Lavlu, 32, store in-charge; and Al-Amin, 27, security supervisor; of Tazreen Fashion Ltd -- in the capital and Ashulia.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Wasim Sheikh passed the order after Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station and also investigation officer in the case, produced them before the court seeking seven days' remand for each.
In the forwarding report, the investigation officer said three officials, who usually control the garment workers, padlocked all the collapsible gates when the fire broke out at the factory on Saturday.
If the accused acted responsibly, the victims and others survivours could have escaped the accident without any trouble, the IO said.
So, 111 workers died due to their negligence and that's why they need to be remanded to find out the vital clues about the incident and whereabouts of other persons responsible for incident, he added.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Dhaka District Police Habibur Rahman, at a press briefing, said the three officials were arrested for resisting the workers from leaving the factory, padlocking the collapsible gates of the staircases and providing wrong information to the workers when the fire broke out.
The briefing was held at Dhaka Metropolitan Police Media Centre where the trio was produced Wednesday morning.
The arrestees were not allowed to talk to journalists.
The SP said Ashulia police arrested Dulal from his sister-in-law's (wife's sister) house at Banasree of Rampura in the capital.
Police raided the Uttar Badda residence of Tripti, a nephew of Tazreen factory owner Delwar Hossain, and arrested Hamidul, said Habibur.
Al Amin however was arrested in Ashulia, he added.
After the incident, the workers alleged that some officials obstructed the exit of workers after the fire alarm on Saturday saying that nothing had happened.
