Dhaka, Nov 04 The government has been allowed one more month to implement Judicial Service Pay Commission's recommendations related to increase of pay and allowances of the lower court judges.
A five-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice M Mozammel Hossain on Sunday adjourned a hearing on the issue until Dec 3. However, the court asked the government to implement the pay commission recommendation before the next hearing.
Earlier, the court on Oct 1 gave government a month's time to implement the recommendations. The state did not implement the recommendations, but told court that it has raised judges' salary by 20 percent.
The court on Sunday also asked the government to submit a progress report on the implementation of recommendations of the Pay Commission, set up in 2009, in next hearing.
The court earlier instructed Law, Finance and Cabinet secretaries to implement the recommendations by Oct 1. The order was issued following the verdict on Majdar Hossain case related to the independence of judiciary. However, the government periodically has been seeking time to implement the order.
Attorney General Mahbube Alam on behalf of the state told the court that the government has decided to increase lower court judges' judicial allowances by 50 percent instead of 30 percent.
However, the court at this point repeatedly asked about the progress of implementation of Pay Commission's recommendations. Later, the court adjourned the hearing.
The Pay Commission recommended judicial allowance equivalent to basic salary for the officials of the judiciary. This was supposed to be executed from July 1, 2009.
The commission recommended 65 percent house allowance for those living in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal and 55 percent for other districts.
