Ex-BTCL MD among 14 charged for VoIP graft


Dhaka, Nov 5 Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday filed cases against 14 people including former Managing Director Abu Sayeed of the state-owned telecom operator BTCL after primary investigation found them involved in misappropriating Tk 2.05 billion through illegal VoIP business.
ACC Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumer Bhattacharya told bdnews24.com that five cases have been filed with Ramna Police Station.
Of the accused, six are from the BTCL, or Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Ltd, while others are officials and representatives of foreign companies working with the BTCL.
BTCL's Member (Maintenance and Operation) Mohammad Taufique has also been accused in the cases for his alleged link with the fund misappropriation from the rogue business of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
ACC Deputy Director SM Shahidur Rahman has led a team of four to investigate the allegations against the accused. Its Deputy Assistant Directors Mohammad Mujibur Rahman, Nazim Uddin and Rafi Mohammad Nazmus Sadat have assisted him.
Investigation revealed that some BTCL officials in collaboration with those from foreign companies earned Tk 2.05 billion illegally.
The accused received the amount against fake bank certificates and by striking anti-state deal, according to case documents.
