Rangpur Jamaat men clash with police

Rangpur, Nov 6  About 20 activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami were injured as they clashed with police in Rangpur on Tuesday, a day after a similar clash in the capital left about 50 injured while demonstrating to press for the release of their leaders standing trial over war crimes charges.
Witnesses said the local office of the party was set on fire by locals after the clash broke out.
The Jamaat activists in the district town took out a procession at Shapla intersection around 10am demanding release of their leaders.
An argument between transport workers and the Jamaatis followed.
As the police reached there and tried to calm down the situation, the protesters started pelting stones at the law enforcers.
Police later wielded baton as a clash broke out between the transport workers and the Jamaat activists.
Soon locals joined police to help disperse the Islamist party activists and set the party's office in the area afire.
The clash lasted for about two hours when the police fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Circle A) ABM Zakir Hossain said police had no alternatives left but to lob teargas shells and charge baton in self-defence.
He said he did not know about the Jamaat office being set on fire.
Hossain said some police officers including Kotwali Police Station's Officer-in Charge Altaf Hossain received injuries during the clashes.
Jamaat's chief of the metropolitan unit Mahbubur Rahman claimed the locals launched the attack instigated by the police.
According to him, 10 of his party's activists were arrested from the scene of unrest.
