4 cops hurt; vehicles, roadside shops vandalised; 36 Shibir men held

policemen were injured when the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir
suddenly attacked them at Sholashahar in Chittagong city Sunday morning.The marauding Shibir men also vandalised several vehicles including a police van and some roadside shops.
Meanwhile, a clash took place between the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and the Shibir at a dormitory in Chittagong Medical College following the morning violence.
Police detained 36 Shibir activists from the spot.
Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station, said about 50 Shibir men with a rally was going to the Gate No. 2 intersection in Sholashahar around 10:00am and swooped on the law enforcers.
They also vandalised a stationary police pick-up van and a BRTC bus on the road, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting the police officer.
In the face of sudden attack, the law enforcers ran for shelter and entered the campus of nearby Premier University in Probarthak area.
The Shibir men then chased the law enforcers and ransacked the collapsible gate of the university which was padlocked to prevent them.
In their despair, the Shibir men then vandalised a university microbus and few other vehicles in the intersection.
They also ransacked several business establishments mostly roadside shops there.
Later, they marched towards Chawkbazar area of the port city.
On the other hand, Bijoy Sarker, general secretary of the Chittagong Medical College Chhatra Shangsad unit, said on information, BCL men rushed to the Probarthak intersection and managed to catch three Shibir men.
Searching their cell phones, they (BCL men) found a SMS (Short Message Service) that ordered all Shibir activists to be united at different city parts to create anarchy.
Later, they reached the main men's hostel and the clash erupted between the two groups.
Police reached the spot and detained 36 Shibir activists from there, said Tareq Ahmed, additional deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
Meanwhile, protesting the vandalism, around 300 students of the Premier University took to the street and burnt tyres on the road around 11:00am when the report was filed.
Injured policemen include: Bashir Ahmed, a sub-inspector of Baizit Bostami Police Station, Habildar Monir Hossain and Constable Tofazzal Hossain.
They were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment, the OC said.
Earlier on November 14, the Jamaat-Shibir man went on berserk in the capital, torched police motorbikes, vandalised three news vans and dozens of public and private vehicles and beat up the common people indiscriminately.
On November 4, the Jamaat announced a nine-day agitation programme beginning from November 5 to press home its demand for the immediate release of the party's top leaders, including those facing war crimes trial.
During the last few day several hundreds of people including policemen and journalists were injured during clashes between the police and Jamaat-Shibir men across the country.
