Dhaka, Nov 4 Awami League Presidium Member and Chittagong-12 (Anwara) MP Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu died at a Singapore hospital on Sunday.
The 71-year-old leading entrepreneur of the port city died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital around 4:30am, his private secretary Borhanuddin Chowdhury Murad told bdnews24.com.
"He was suffering from kidney complications for a long time. He had been treated in Singapore for around a month," he said.
The three-time MP was the head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Textiles and Jute.
The AL leader left behind wife, three sons and three daughters. "Most of them are in Singapore at the moment and will decide how and when his body will be brought back home," Murad added.
Akhtaruzzaman was serving as the President of Chittagong south district unit of AL since 1977. Many AL leader and workers in the region said he was like a 'political guardian' to them.
