"He (Muhith) said that it was not too much money even though so much money disappeared from a state-run bank. It means that he knows of incidents of looting of more money than that [from Sonali Bank]," BNP's National Standing Committee Member M K Anwar told a discussion at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
"Not only this, when the Bangladesh Bank proposed to dissolve the Board of Directors of the Sonali Bank, the Finance Minister showed an angry face. From this, it is clearly understood that the economy of Bangladesh is going through extreme disorder," he added.
The central bank in a recent review said Tk 36.0648 billion have been embezzled from the Sonali Bank. Of the amount, Hallmark Group alone withdrew over Tk 26 billion.
"The government has created such an environment that no-one will say anything if you grease one's palms, you'll get promoted, instead," Anwar, a former Finance Secretary, said in the discussion organised by Constitutional Rights Forum.
Former students' leader Suranjan Ghosh read out the key paper in the discussion titled: "There is no alternative to impartial government to resolve the current conflicting situation in Bangladesh's politics."
BNP leader Anwar also talked about the Padma bridge issue.
"Actually, the current government doesn't want the Padma bridge. They are out to loot money in any way," Anwar alleged.
