BNP to mourn Iskander Tuesday

BNP will observe mourning day across the country on Tuesday to mourn the death of party chairperson's younger brother and former lawmaker Maj (retd) Sayeed Iskander.
Besides arranging recitation from the holy Quran, black flags will be hoisted and party flag will be kept half-mast at BNP offices across the country, said a party press release signed by its joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
The main opposition party has asked all of its units and front and associate bodies to observe the day with due solemnity.
The party high-ups suspended a demonstration which was scheduled for Monday. Tuesday's two programmes -- chairperson's views-exchange meeting with cultural activists and party training workshop -- have also been suspended, the press release added.
Sayeed Iskander, president of party's Feni district unit and member of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's advisory council, who was suffering from cancer for quite a long time, passed away on Sunday at a hospital in New York.
His body might be brought to the country on Wednesday morning, party leaders said.
Meanwhile, leaders of different social and political organisations expressed deep shock over the death of Iskander and said his death is an irreparable loss for the party and the country as well.
They also expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed for the salvation of his departed soul.
Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partha MP and Secretary General Shamim Al Mamun, former minister and BNP leader Tariqul Islam, Nazrul Islam Khan, among others, condoled the death of Iskander.
