Sunday, September 9, 2012 Nur Chowdhury, a convicted fugitive killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, could not be deported from Canada as the country’s constitution does not allow extradition of a recipient of capital punishment.
Michael Prue, member of a provincial parliament in the Beaches in Toronto, Ontario reaffirmed this at a meet-the-press organised by the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Sunday.
“Charter 12 of our constitution says everyone has the right not to be subjected to any cruel and unusual treatment of punishment,” said Prue.
“We do not, have not and cannot extradite any person who is awarded with capital punishment,” said Prue.
On a short visit to Bangladesh, Prue also expressed concern about the prevailing disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh.
Around 12,000 expatriate Bangladeshis live in Prue’s constituency.
