When contacted, Bangladesh Chhatra League's DU unit General Secretary Omar Sharif told bdnews24.com that the pro-Jamaat-e-Islami students were trying to create anarchy on the campus in various ways.
"There was influence of Shibir in the protests. So they were not allowed to demonstrate," he said.
Those who came to join the demonstration on the footstall of Aparajeyo Bangladesh said they had seen leaflets and graffiti of 'Movement against quota system' in the past few days.
"I came to know about the demonstration at 10am on Saturday from a leaflet inside a daily on Thursday," a post-graduate student of the Department of Psychology told bdnews24.com.
Asked who ran the campaign, he could not answer. "But it seems to me that their movement is logical. So I came here," he added.
Around 100 students came to join the protest. But the Chhatra League activists obstructed them from gathering.
Currently, in recruitment of government officials, quota related to freedom fighters is 30 percent, districts 10 percent, women 10 percent, small ethnic groups five percent and for the disabled it is one percent.
It means that the government is recruiting only 44 percent officials on the basis of merit.
Those who came to protest the quota system felt that meritorious candidates were thrown out only for the system.
They said the recent circulars of 32nd Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) tests and appointment of Sonali Bank officials had impacted them most.
