"You can even call State Ministers like me, or even the Prime Minister, by issuing summons to appear in the court," he said on Saturday. "But do not abuse that power."
Quamrul was speaking as the Chief Guest at the inauguration of the 116th Judicial Administration Training Course organised by the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI).
He added that the government was working to cull case backlogs at the courts pointing out: "We initially appointed 200 Assistant Judges in this tenure, and then another 100. We will appoint more judges in this tenure. We have also promoted judges. In the past, such appointments had nearly stopped."
The State Minister pointed out that currently, there were more than two million disputes awaiting settlement in the courts. "However, the number is coming down due to the government's adoption of alternative dispute resolution system."
"The incidents of eve-teasing had suddenly increased recently. But they have almost stopped following the government's formation of mobile courts to address the issue. The Code of Civil Procedure has been amended to accommodate alternative dispute resolution.
"The backlog of civil cases has gone down because of that. The same will be done for criminal cases as well," Quamrul Islam added.
He added that recently a controversy had cropped up between the parliament and the judiciary. "But, I hope the conflict will be resolved through interference of the Supreme Court."
