20 Bangladeshis return
Dhaka, Sep 21 Twenty Bangladeshi illegal immigrants returned home on Friday after serving 10 months in jails in the African state of Tanzania.
They reached Shahjalal International Airport by a Turkish Airlines plane at 5am, Assistant Commissioner of the Immigration Police Kamal Uddin told bdnews24.com.
They were captured by Tanzanian police last year on their way to South Africa in search of better jobs with the help of the middlemen.
They were identified as Anis Khan, Baltu Mia, Ali Noor, Wahid Hawlader, Mohammad Rasel, Fafuk Hawlader, Jahidur Rahman, Amanul Haque, Fazlul Haque, Kala Chand, Mohammad Billal, Abdul Malek, Jamal Hossain, Abu Naser, Mohammad Alaluddin, Ramjan Mia, Masum Mia, Kabil Mia, Shahid Mia and Helal Uddin.
The immigration police sent back all of them excepting Helal Uddin to their home as the embassy had informed the Bangladesh Police that he was directly involved in trafficking the 19 others to South Africa.
"There was uncertainty over the deportation of the detainees since most of them were poor. Later they were repatriated home with the financial assistance of non-government organisation MGH, and negotiation between Bangladesh's Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training and the Kenyan embassy," the police official said.
According to media reports, as many as 372 Bangladeshis were arrested this year when they were on their way to South Africa.
In June last year, at least 39 Bangladeshis who were cheated in the name of getting jobs in Liberia returned home after over three months' stay in makeshift shelters provided by Bangladeshi peacekeepers there.
In April 2010, some 23 Bangladesh nationals were detained by the national police of Burundi for entering the African nation illegally. According to the security services, the detainees entered Bujumbura, the capital with fake travel documents.
