'Mir Jafars impeding development work'

Dhaka, Sep 21  In his remarks slanted apparently towards the opposition, newly-appointed Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir claimed on Friday that a quarter is working to hamper various development initiatives of the government and dubbed then 'universal Mir Jafars'.
Mir Jafar was a Bengali Nabab who made a secret pact with British Lord Robert Clive in his thirst to become the Nabab of Bengal and surrendered to slaughter the Army in the Battle of Plassey by withholding his division from fighting. With time, the name became synonymous with traitors in Bengali, Urdu and Hindi.
"Whenever we try to implement projects, including the Padma bridge, for the development of Bangladesh, they create hurdles," he said in a programme organised at the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium to mark the 32nd founding anniversary of the Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote.
The Home Minister alleged that they also barred those who want to work with the government, and terming them as 'traitors of the state' and 'universal Mir Jafar' urged building 'political' and 'cultural' resistance against them.
