BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday branded the grand alliance government as a champion of graft in the world as it has “indulged in plundering public wealth” in the name of ensuring the welfare of people.
The opposition leader said each and every member of this government, including the prime minister’s family members and relatives, are engaged in corruption, pushing the country into the abyss of darkness.
About the caretaker government issue, she said, “You (govt) will have to arrange the election under a caretaker government at any cost. Holding election under a caretaker administration has become a demand of the mass people.”
“No formula will work…we’ll create such a situation with the people of the country, they (govt) won’t find any route to escape,” Khaleda said.
She said the election must be held under the caretaker government as credible polls are impossible under the Awami League government.
Khaleda claimed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is out to undermine Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus as she has got crazy to win a Nobel Prize.
“Dr Yunus is the pride of the country. He has won the Nobel Prize in recognition of his huge contributions to the rural economy. Now, it needs to be known whether a Nobel Prize can be given for graft because the prime minister deserves the Nobel Prize for corruption,” she said.
On Padma bridge issue, Khaleda said the government has finally bowed down to the World Bank exposing its huge corruption in the project.
“So, the government is a world thief. Catch the corrupt government people wherever you (people) find them, and force them to kneel down.”
The former premier said the situation would have been different had the government accepted the World Bank conditions 10 months ago.
Criticising the Supreme Court verdict on the caretaker government system, Khaleda said a retired chief justice (ABM Khairul Haque) cannot sign on the verdict in such a way.
The opposition leader said no election could be neutral under this Awami League government. “Awami League not only has the expertise in plundering, it also has the know-how in vote rigging. Election can’t be neutral under this government. Country can’t be saved by Awami League. So, change is a must.”
Describing the recent border killings, Khaleda said killings along the border and other parts of the country are going on. “No one of us is safe under this regime. The government has no right to hang onto power.”
On enforced disappearances, Khaleda said they are not scared of incidents of disappearances and killings. “We’re with the people of the country. We’ll together save the country from the hands of troublemakers.”
She reiterated that late president Ziaur Rahman was the proclaimer of independence and the country would not have been liberated unless he had pronounced it. “Ziaur Rahman was a freedom fighter and BNP is a party of freedom fighters.”
The rally was organised as part of the opposition leaders’ month-long campaign, aiming to drum up support for the annulled caretaker government system.
Khaleda reached the venue at 4:10 pm amid slogans by thousands of leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations as well as the 18-party alliance.
Khaleda arrived in Dinajpur at 3:40 pm and stayed at the Circuit House for a while and then joined the rally.
She started her address paying tributes to her late sister Dr Khurshid Jahan Haque.
BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Mirza Abbas, BNP Chairperson’s adviser Fazlur Rahman Patal, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami acting Ameer Makbul Ahmed, President of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Oli Ahmad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, AZM Zahid, Mufti Ishaque of Islami Oikya Jote also spoke at the rally.
BNP Dinajpur district unit president Lutfar Rahman Pintu presided over the rally.
