Family sources told the Outlook Magazine of India that he died on Tuesday morning after a brief illness.
Bengali daily Anandabazar in its online edition reported that the writer died at around 12pm at a private hospital in Kolkata where he had been admitted on Aug 30.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and as many daughters.
It is not clear as to what diseases he had been suffering from.
Siraj won the coveted Sahitya Akademi Award in 1994 for his novel 'Aleek Manush' and penned over 200 books, including some for children which were very popular.
The magazine reported that his body would be kept at a city mortuary and would be later taken to his ancestral house at Khoshbashpur in Murshidabad district where he would be buried on Wednesday.
Born on Oct 14, 1930, at Khoshbashpur village in Murshidabad district, the writer fled home to join theatre in his teens.
Apart from his literary works, he also worked for Anandabazar newspaper.
