his quizzing at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) headquarters,
Hall-Mark General Manager Tusher Ahmed on Wednesday said that he had
not taken any political advantage for availing the Tk 2,686 crore loan.“I have taken the loan without any irregularities and I did not counterfeit any documents,” Tusher told reporters emerging from the grilling room.
A six-member investigation team headed by ACC Deputy Director Mir Joynal Abedin Shibli questioned Tusher for the second time for more than three hours from 10:45am.
Asked why Hall-Mark group has been involved in land grabbing, Tusher said, “We filled the land we purchased with sand, it was not grabbing.”
Earlier on May 25, court orders to arrest the Hall-Mark managing director followed a Tk 40 lakh fine made by Department of Environment (DoE) for alleged land grabbing.
Tusher further commented aiming reporters, “Why are you [the media] after the loan only? We export goods worth millions of dollars and earn revenues for the country – why don’t you write that?”
Earlier on Sunday, the ACC summoned Tanvir Mahmud, former managing director of Hall-Mark Group, his wife Jasmine Islam, also the chairman of Hall-Mark, and general manager Tushar Ahmed over the Sonali Bank loan scam.
The former MD embezzled Tk 2,686 crore in loan from the Ruposhi Bangla Hotel branch of Sonali Bank between 2010 and May this year.
Following Sunday’s quizzing, the former MD dismissed the allegation of taking loan showing fake documents from Sonali Bank saying the loan was taken according to existing rules.
Sonali Bank's Ruposhi Bangla branch came under the spotlight recently after a Bangladesh Bank investigation found the branch at fault for disbursing loan to Hallmark group in unscrupulous ways.
An external audit report on Monday found the loan given out from the branch is conducive to embezzlement as the Ruposhi Bangla branch manager did not carry out any of the essential steps against the gross irregularities in lending procedures.
