Pro-hartal
activists set fire to a tire on Kushtia-Meherpur highway at a bazaar of
Gangni upazila in Meherpur Sunday morning during a dawn-to-dusk strike.
Road
communications between Meherpur and other parts of the country remain
cut off as Awami League is observing a daylong hartal in Gangni upazila
of the district since Sunday morning protesting the killing of a party
leader. Unidentified criminals shot dead Shahiduzzaman Beltu, 40, a member of the executive body of Gangni upazila AL unit, at Bamundi bazar in the upazila Thursday night. Beltu was the joint secretary of Meherpur District Bus Owners' Association.
Pro-hartal activists were not allowing any vehicles to ply on the Kushtia-Meherpur highway due to the strike since 6:00am, that halted the road communications of Meherpur with Dhaka and the rest of the country, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
AL leaders and activists led by Mokbul Hossain, former lawmaker from Meherpur-2, were seen picketing at different points in the upazila in the morning.
The AL men have been demanding immediate arrest of the killers and also removal of Superintendent of Police in Meherpur Abdullal Hell Baki as he failed to ensure security of the leaders and activists.
Meanwhile, Beltu's mother Sokhina Begum filed a murder case with Gangni Police Station Saturday night, Officer-In-Charge of Gangni Police Station Mizanur Rahman said.
