Pro-opposition lawyers demand Justice Nizamul's removal from HC

A sector of pro-BNP and Jamaat lawyers on Sunday demanded removal of Justice Nizamul Huq from the post of High Court judge through Supreme Judicial Council.
They also demanded trial of Justice Nazmul for his Skype conversation with Dr Ahmed Ziauddin, an expatriate Bangladeshi legal expert.
Justice Nizamul has violated constitution and oath and committed misconduct holding Skype conversation about the trial proceedings of International Crimes Tribunal-1, said Khandker Mahbub Hossain, vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council.
He was speaking at a press conference at the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium.
Khandker Mahbub, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, urged the chief justice not to form any HC bench with Justice Nizamul for discharging any judicial function until the allegations against him regarding his Skype conversation are not settled.
He said Justice Nizamul has to be removed from the High Court to uphold the image and dignity of the Supreme Court.
Justice Nizamul resigned from the post International Crimes Tribunal-1 chairman on December 11 amid controversy over his Skype conversation with Bangladeshi expatriate Dr Ahmed Ziauddin.
Pro-BNP lawyers advocate Joinul Abedin, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon MP and Jamaat-backed lawyer barrister Abdur Razzaq and Tajul Islam echoed Khandker Mahbub on the occasion.

Bishwajit killer Shakil remanded

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Rafiqul Islam Shakil, the key accused of Bishwajit Das killing case, on an eight-day remand. Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfan Ullah passed the order after Tajul Islam, an inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, produced Shakil before it seeking a 10-day remand. In the forwarding report, Tajul Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said Shakil is the prime accused in the case. They identified Shakil from photos and video footages of the murder scene where Shakil hacked Bishwajit with a machete on December 9 in Sutrapur of Old Dhaka. So, the accused need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the killing and the whereabouts of their other accomplices responsible for committing such offence, the IO said. 78.67pc pass HSC exam

Dhaka, Jul 18 This year 78.67 percent has passed the Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations and 61,162 got GPA-5. The Education Minister Nurul Islam has submitted a copy of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban Wednesday morning. Chairmen of different education boards were present there. Last year, 75.08 percent passed the HSC and equivalent examinations and 39,759 got GPA-5. This year Sylhet board has the highest passing rate of 85.37 percent. Dhaka board follows with 81.89 percent, Comilla with 74.56, Rajshahi 78.44 percent, Dinajpur 75.41 percent, Chittagong 72.29 percent, Jessore 67.87 percent and Barisal with 66.98 percent. The pass rate under the Madrasah board is 91.77 percent while the vocational board has 84.32 percent successful students. Sircar, Akhtar Hamid get bail

Judge Mohammad Zahirul Haque of the Senior Special Judges' Court in Dhaka granted them bail after they surrendered before the court in the morning and sought bail in the cases. The court fixed January 10 for passing an order on whether it would take the charges into cognisance. The ACC on December 28, 2010 filed the cases with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The anti-graft watchdog pressed charges against Jamir Uddin and Akhtar Hamid on November 7 and 8 this year respectively.
