Twelve like-minded Islamist parties called an eight-hour hartal in the capital for Thursday and daylong elsewhere in the country protesting the left-leaning political parties' Tuesday shutdown.
The hartal will be observed for eight hours from 6:00am to 2:00pm in the city due to a seminar of Qaumi madrasa education system, Mohammad Jafarullah Khan, secretary general of Khelafat Andolon, told The Daily Star on Wednesday.
Rangpur will be kept out of the purview of the hartal due to Thursday's city corporation poll, Jafarullah added.
The shutdown came only a day after the left-leaning parties including Communist Party of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal observed a countrywide daylong hartal on Tuesday demanding ban on communal politics including that of the Jamaat-e-Islami, and speedy disposal of the war crimes trials.
