Road crash in Narsingdi kills 12

 
A microbus lies in wreckage after a bus smashed it killing 11 people on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi on Sunday. 
At least 12 people were killed and 19 injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Narsingdi on Sunday.
Police said all the deceased from Mirpur area of the capital were heading for the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) in Sylhet in the microbus.
The accident happened at Chaitanya area in Shibpur upazila around 12:30pm when a Dhaka-bound bus of Haor Bilas Paribahan hit the microbus carrying 13 passengers, said Nazrul Islam, a sergeant of Narsingdi Highway Police.
The official said eight of them died on the spot, two succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital while the rest were pronounced dead at Narsingdi District Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Ten of the deceased are: microbus driver Faruk Hossain, 30, Arif, 8, Safiullah, 65, Rafique, 40, Moyez Uddin, 42, Anik, 8, Ibrahim Miah, 70, Nannu Mia, 45, Masudur Rahman, 45, and Solaiman, 50.
The condition of the lone surviving microbus passenger undergoing treatment at the Narsingdi hospital is stated to be critical, said the police official.
KM Firoz, officer-in-charge of Shibpur Police Station, told The Daily Star that the bodies were sent to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Labour and Employment Minister Razi Uddin Ahmed Raju, Narsingdi Deputy Commissioner Obaidul Azam and Narsingdi Superintendent of Police (SP) Khandaker Mohid Uddin visited the injured at the hospital.

Bishwajit killer Shakil remanded

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Rafiqul Islam Shakil, the key accused of Bishwajit Das killing case, on an eight-day remand. Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfan Ullah passed the order after Tajul Islam, an inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, produced Shakil before it seeking a 10-day remand. In the forwarding report, Tajul Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said Shakil is the prime accused in the case. They identified Shakil from photos and video footages of the murder scene where Shakil hacked Bishwajit with a machete on December 9 in Sutrapur of Old Dhaka. So, the accused need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the killing and the whereabouts of their other accomplices responsible for committing such offence, the IO said. 78.67pc pass HSC exam

Dhaka, Jul 18 This year 78.67 percent has passed the Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations and 61,162 got GPA-5. The Education Minister Nurul Islam has submitted a copy of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban Wednesday morning. Chairmen of different education boards were present there. Last year, 75.08 percent passed the HSC and equivalent examinations and 39,759 got GPA-5. This year Sylhet board has the highest passing rate of 85.37 percent. Dhaka board follows with 81.89 percent, Comilla with 74.56, Rajshahi 78.44 percent, Dinajpur 75.41 percent, Chittagong 72.29 percent, Jessore 67.87 percent and Barisal with 66.98 percent. The pass rate under the Madrasah board is 91.77 percent while the vocational board has 84.32 percent successful students. Sircar, Akhtar Hamid get bail

Judge Mohammad Zahirul Haque of the Senior Special Judges' Court in Dhaka granted them bail after they surrendered before the court in the morning and sought bail in the cases. The court fixed January 10 for passing an order on whether it would take the charges into cognisance. The ACC on December 28, 2010 filed the cases with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The anti-graft watchdog pressed charges against Jamir Uddin and Akhtar Hamid on November 7 and 8 this year respectively.
