Jamaat-e-Islami will enforce an eight-hour hartal in Sylhet division on Wednesday in protest against foiling of its rally in the city and demanding release of its central acting secretary general Shafiqur Rahman.The shutdown will begin at 6:00am and continue till 2:00pm on Wednesday, Fakhrul Islam, Sylhet city unit Jamaat secretary, told our Sylhet correspondent.
The Jamaat leader said the programme has been announced as law enforcers foiled their rally which was scheduled to hold at Court point to press home their demand for the release Shafiqur, who was arrested on Thursday from his Dhanmondi residence in Dhaka.
Earlier around 2:30pm, Jamaat-Shibir brought out processions at Shibganj and Kadamtoli areas in support of the rally.
Jamaat-Shibir activists got into clashes at Shibganj and Kadamtoli with the law enforcers who resisted the demonstrators as they brought out two processions in the areas.
At least 25 people including seven policemen were injured during the 30-minute clash in the afternoon.
Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir also torched a police pick-up van at Shibganj around 3:00pm, Rezaul Karim, deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star.
Police lobbed several teargas canisters to disperse the activists at Kadamtoli.
Police detained four activists from the spot.
However, police brought the situation under control in the city soon after the clash, said the deputy commissioner.
