2 more accused on 8-day remand

In this December 9 photo, “Chhatra League activists” beat and hack a youth named Bishwajit, mistaking him for an opposition supporter in front of Victoria Park in Old Dhaka.
Two more suspected killers of Bishwajit Das were placed on an eight-day remand on Saturday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Salam granted the remand after Mahbubul Alam Akond, a sub-inspector of Sutrapur Police Station, produced Saiful Islam and Rasheduzzaman Shaon before the court today.
Akond, also investigation officer of the case, sought a 10-day remand for each.
Saiful and Rasheduzzaman, the fourth-year students of history department at Jagannath University, were arrested in Dhaka and in Sylhet on Friday in connection with the murder.
Twenty-four-year-old Bishwajit, a tailor, was beaten and hacked to death by activists of pro-Awami League student body Chhatra League during the early hours of the blockade enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.
In the remand petition, the IO said the law enforcers had identified the dup after examining video footage, and found that they were directly involved in the killing.
Photographs and video footage of the December 9 murder show Saiful and Shaon hitting Bishwajit with iron rods, he said.
The duo needed to be remanded to find out vital clues about the killing and whereabouts of their accomplices, the IO added.
On Friday, another court placed three people held earlier in connection with the murder on an eight-day remand each.
