Moulvibazar, Dec 1 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday advised BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to leave the company of Jamaat-e-Islami, a key ally of the main opposition which opposes the War of Independence and trial of war criminals.
Hasina's call came from a rally organised by the district unit of the ruling Awami League in Moulvibazar in the afternoon.
In a remark apparently slanted towards Khaleda, she said, "Try to understand the minds of people. Leave the side of Jamaat and Shibir. Then you might get a little place in the minds of Bangladesh's people."
The Awami League-led Grand Alliance government is currently trying the entire top Jamaat leadership for their alleged crimes against humanity during the nation's War of Independence in 1971.
Hasina, also the ruling party President, said, "You can try as much as you want ... you will not be able to save the war criminals."
She asked the leaders and activists gathered at the Moulvibazar Government School ground, "Do you want the war criminals to be tried?"
As the crowd shouted "yes", she asked again, "Raise your hands if you want the war criminals to be tried."
Then the people gathered at the rally raised their hands shouting "Yes".
