Don't waste electricity, PM urges countrymen

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday reiterated her call to the people to maintain austerity in using electricity as she said saving of power is very important alongside production.
"I appeal to the countrymen--- don't waste electricity and be economical in its use," she said while inaugurating the Powerpac- Mutiara 100 megawatt quick rental power plant at Chargalgalia in Keraniganj in the morning.
Sheikh Hasina stressed the need for creating mass awareness about saving electricity as she said the government has to spend a huge amount of money every year to generate power. "It is not proper to indiscriminate use of electricity as we have to spend a huge amount of money in the sector every year," she said.
Powerpac Holdings Ltd, a concern of Sikder Group which set up the plant on 7.11 acre of land beside the Dhaka-Mawa Highway, would run it on build, own and operate (BOO) basis.
Adviser to the prime minister Dr Tawfique-e-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Energy, Power and Mineral Resources M Enamul Haque, State Minister for Law Advocate Quamrul Islam, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy, Power and Mineral Resources Maj Gen (retd) Subid Ali Bhuiyan, Nasrul Hamid Bipu, MP, Keraniganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Shaheen Ahmed and Chairman of the Sikder Group Zainul Haque Sikder also spoke at the function.
Power Division Secretary M Abul Kalam Azad delivered the welcome address, while Power Development Board (PDB) Chairman Abdul Wahab Khan gave the vote of thanks.
The prime minister said the country witnessed unprecedented development in all sectors including power in the last four years and the people are getting its benefit.
Highlighting the government steps for the development of the power sector, she said: "At the beginning of the government, we had taken short, mid and long-term programmes by giving topmost priority to rebuild the shattered power system."
As part of the programmes, she said the government has given priority to set up rental and quick rental power plants side by side with repair of the old power plants.
"We attracted private investment and implemented large power plants," she said, adding public and private sectors have already invested about eight billion dollars in the sector.
The prime minister said 3650 MW electricity has already been added to the national grid from 52 power plants in the last four years thanks to joint efforts of the public and private sectors.
"We have been able to generate highest 6350 MW electricity as our power production capacity has been increased to 8425 MW," she said.
Sheikh Hasina said the present government has produced more electricity than its election commitment. "Fifty-eight percent people have been brought under the network of electricity, while power connection has been given to 25 lakh new subscribers," she said
