Around 40 people including policemen and photo journalists were injured as the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with law enforcers in three districts on Wednesday.
15 people were injured in Khulna, 20 injured in Sylhet and three injured in Narayanganj.
Police arrested 40 Jamaat and Shibir activists in Sylhet while a police pick-up van was vandalised in Narayanganj.
In Khulna, at least 15 people including one police personnel were injured as the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with law enforcers on Wednesday.
During the clash, the Jamaat-Shibir men also hurled five cocktails on the law enforcers forcing them to fire a rubber bullet and a teargas shell, reports our Khulna correspondent.
The clash ensured around 10:00am when nearly one hundred Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession from the in front of Boyra Bazaar area as part of their programme demanding release of their arrested leaders including the war crimes suspects.
When the procession came near Public College area, the law enforcers obstructed them prompting the clash, said Quamruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonadanga Model Police Station.
Rakib, a police constable also sustained injury during the clash, the OC added.
Abul Kalam Azad, ameer of Khulna city Jamaat unit, claimed that at least 14 Jamaat-Shibir men were injured by police attack.
In Sylhet, at least 20 people including two photo journalists were injured in a clash between law enforcers and Jamaat-Shibir activists at Zindabazar are on Wednesday.
Police swooped on a sudden procession of Jamaat-Shibir at Zindabazar area around 2:30pm, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
Police charged baton and detained at least 40 people from the area. During the clash four crackers went off, the report added.
Dispersed activists took shelters in nearby markets and allies.
Shafique Ahmed, cameraman of channel 24 and Mahmud, local photographer of a national daily were injured in the clash.
Abdullah Al Azad Chowdhury, additional commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police told The Daily Star that the situation is under control.
Three policemen were injured in an attack by the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir in Narayanganj city on Wednesday.
Police detained four Shibir activists -- Robiul Awal, 27, Shakhawat Hossain, 20, Abu Naeem, 19, and Ashiqul Islam, 20 -- from the spot, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Witnesses and police said Shibir activists brought out a procession at Mondolpara around 10:30am demanding immediate release of the detained top Jamaat leaders.
Terming the war crimes trial 'farcical', the shibir men were also demanding immediate stop of the trial procedures.
Suddenly, the angry Shibir activists launched an attack on a patrol team of police and vandalised their pick-up van.
Robi Charan Chowhan, sub-inspector of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station and constables Abul Kashem and Jewel were injured during the incident.
The van driver van also sustained injuries during the attack.
The injured police men were admitted to a local hospital, said Sheikh Nazmul Alam, superintendent of police (SP) in Narayanganj.
Meanwhile, 10 police men were injured when Shibir men launched a sudden attack on the law enforcers from a procession in the city and torched a police pick-up van on November 19.
Police have so far arrested 90 persons including, Narayanganj district Jamaat ameer Mainuddin, after two separate cases were lodged in connection with the incident.
