Dhaka, Oct 3 The Detective Branch of Police have arrested Juba Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal in connection with two cases filed over Tuesday's clashes with the law enforcers in front of the BNP's Naya Paltan headquarters.
Deputy Commissioner (Media) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police Masudur Rahman confirmed bdnews24.com the arrest.
Alal's aide Mohammad Jahangir told bdnews24.com that after remaining holed up in the BNP headquarters overnight, he went out around noon with senior leaders of the party. Soon afterwards, the detective police picked him up from Kakrail area.
At least 20 people were injured on Tuesday in a clash in Netrokona between the BNP and ruling Awami League activists ahead of an 18-Party Alliance rally. The rally stage was also set ablaze.
Police foiled a procession of BNP fronts -- Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal -- in the capital same day around 4:30pm protesting the Netrokona incident, leading to a clash in front of the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan.
The law-enforcers fired several rounds of teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Paltan Police Station Sub-Inspector Idris Ali filed a case over smashing vehicles, attacking police and obstructing government duty. He filed the other case under the Speedy Trial Act.
The plaintiff said he had named 49 people in the two cases and sued around 250 unidentified people.
The other case over the same incident was filed at the Ramna Police Station by Sub-Inspector Azam Uddin for taking out rally illegally and indulging in vandalism.
