Cops foil Destiny demo, 80 held

Police foiled a human chain programme of Destiny Group distributors in front of Jatiya Press Club and picked up 80 of them from different parts in the city Tuesday morning.
Several people were injured as the law enforcers charged batons and fire teargas shells on the distributors at Paltan, Kakrail and Fakirerpool around 8:30am when they were going to the press club for holding the programme.
The agents rushed to Dhaka from different parts of the country to take part in the pre-scheduled programme protesting against the freeze of its bank accounts and cases filed against its officials.
As they were going towards the press club in processions in the morning, police detained them from Kakrail, Paltan, Fakirerpool, Topkhana Road, Mouchak and Gulishtan areas.
Paltan police detained 40 distributors on charge of their unruly activities and for hampering transport movement on the city streets, Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Forty others were picked up by Shahbag and Ramna police.
The multilevel company officials allegedly transferred crores of taka from the company accounts to their personal accounts.

The Anti-Corruption Commission on July 31 sued 22 Destiny officials including its managing director Md Rafiqul Amin on charges of siphoning off Tk 3,285.26 crore.
On October 2, a Dhaka court asked the ACC to take steps to freeze 532 bank accounts of Destiny Group and Destiny-2000 Ltd.
