storm destroys a house at Soleman Bazar area under Char Clark union of
Subarnachar upazila in Noakhali early
At
least 22 people were killed and many injured when storms lashed through
several upazilas of Noakhali, Bhola and Chittagong early Thursday.Of the victims, 12 were killed in Noakhali, six in Bhola and four in Chittagong.
Our Noakhali correspondent reports, the storm killed 12 people in Hatia and Subarnachar upazilas.
Moktar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Hatia Police Station, and advocate Enam, chairman of Mohammadpur union Parishad confirmed the deaths.
The 20-minute long storm that started from 2:00am also destroyed mosques, educational institutions and more than 200 thatched houses in Subarnachar, Hatia, Companiganj and Sadar upazilas.
The storm also uprooted scores of trees that snapped road communications in Subarnachar and Hatia.
Electricity supply remained snapped at the district headquarters following the storm.
Three of the deceased are: Sharmin, 10, Nur Jahan, 55, of Subarnachar, and Rajeshwari Das, 45, of Hatia.
Fourteen cattle were also killed during the storm.
Several fishermen with their fishing trawlers remain missing until 12:00noon when this report was filed, said Mohiuddin, chairman of Char King Union Parishad.
In Bhola, six people were killed and hundreds of thatched houses destroyed in Char Fashion and Monpura upazilas during the storm, reports our Barisal correspondent.
Naresh Chandra Karmakar, officer-in-charge of Monpura Police Station, confirmed the deaths of Shah Alam, 40, and Abdul Khalek, 30.
Besides, two fertiliser and sand-laden cargoes capsized in Meghna during the storm, Naresh said adding that more than 1,000 fishermen with 100 trawlers remain missing until 2:00pm today.
He also said the storm also damaged around 800 houses and up rooted a few hundred trees in the upazila.
One Amena Begum, 32, died during the storm at Dhalchar in Char Fashion upazila, said Sultan Ahmed, officer-in-charge of South Aicha Police Station.
The South Aicha OC also informed that 14 trawler went missing with 500 fishermen.
In Chittagong, four people were killed as a storm swept over Swandip and Mirsarai upazilas.
Two of the deceased are Khodeza Begum, 65, of and Anwara Begum, 30, of Swandip, and Shamsul Haque, 60, of Mirsarai upazila headquarters.
Maksudur Rahman Phul Miyan, UP Chairman of Santospur, said of the two women, one died in a house collapse and the other died when an up rooted tree fell on her.
Besides, Md Giasuddin, Upazila Chairman of Mirsarai, confirmed the The Daily Star about the death of Shamsul Haque, 6o, of No. 9 ward.
The storm also damaged over 2,000 dwelling houses, 2,500 acres of agricultural land and killed 20 cattle.
