Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.
Criticising
the media for its reports on the army deployment during the next
parliamentary election, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi
Rakibuddin Ahmad said on Wednesday that the news was not presented
accurately. The CEC made the remark just a day after EC Secretary Muhammed Sadique, quoting the chief election commissioner, told reporters that the commission has no plan to deploy army during the next general elections to maintain law and order.
The CEC at a dialogue with reporters at the National Economic Council auditorium in the capital said that the statement did not reflect in the media properly.
The issue of deploying army for maintaining law and order has not decided yet, the CEC said during his welcoming speech at the dialogue.
“It is not right to talk about the initiatives for maintaining the law and order a year ago of the election," he said.
“During every polls, the deployment of the law enforcement agencies depends on local atmosphere. If necessary, highest security measures would be taken,” he added.
Rakibuddin said, “The Election Commission may deploy army according the direction of public representatives. The president can also order on the issue. Members of army and navy can work to maintain law and order side by side with the law enforcers. Before 2001 parliamentary polls, they have worked this way,” he added.
