Dhaka, Oct 17 BNP stalwart Moudud Ahmed on Wednesday said the government's 'repeated failures' to run the country would lead to its fall.
The Standing Committee Member made the statement at a public rally organised as part of the opposition's countrywide antigovernment programme to demand a caretaker government for next parliamentary polls to be overseen.
"The government's failures in the last four years cannot be accommodated in a single list. These failures will cause the government's fall. We will say goodbye to the government through peaceful programme," said the former Law Minister.
"We will urge the people to march ahead with courage," he added.
BNP-led 18-Party alliance will be organising public rallies at all metropolitan cities and district towns to meet its demands and protest against the government's 'repression'.
Wednesday's rally was taken out from the party's Naya Paltan headquarters in the city around 3:45pm. It ended at Maghbazar intersection.
The rally caused a huge traffic tailback in Naya Paltan, Shantinagar and Malibagh areas, causing immense sufferings to commuters.
Earlier in the morning, opposition activists from all the 100 wards thronged the party headquarters in small processions to join the rally, carrying banners, flags and festoons.
A large number of police took position at Fakirerpool, Nayapaltan, Bijoynagar, Kakrail, Shantinagar, Malibagh and Maghbazar areas.
"The government has made Parliament ineffective. They have been holding parliament sessions attended only by one party over the last four years. It did not end there as they have also turned constitutional institutions like Public Service Commission and Election Commission ineffective," Moudud further alleged.
Addressing the rally from a truck used as the stage, he said the World Bank's visit to investigate corruptions in Bangladesh is 'shameful'.
"The Anti-Corruption Commission is acting as a government agent. They are just carrying out government orders. We believe the World Bank will understand it and feel frustrated," Moudud said.
He claimed the government was increasingly influencing media.
Reiterating his party's stance on not joining any election under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said the government better accept their demand without any delay.
He accused the government of planning and carrying out the communal riots at Ramu, Ukhia, Teknaf and Patia for what he said gaining international support by turning Bangladesh into a militant country.
