‘ACC to sue corrupts, if WB can provide evidence’

Finance Minister AMA Muhith
Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday said if the World Bank (WB) could provide evidence of corruption in the Padma Bridge project, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) would sue the corrupt persons.
“If they (WB) provide evidence, the commission can file cases in a week,” Muhith told reporters after a meeting of the cabinet committee on purchase and economic affairs at the cabinet division in the Secretariat.
Though the finance minister said it would not be wise to talk much on the Padma Bridge, he said a lot on this burning issue.
“I’m saying the same thing again that by November we should have the tender and by next February we should have some life into the bridge,” he said.
“I’m saying simply, it will be built,” the finance minister noted.
He said a situation of ‘mistrust’ happened between the government and the Bank, which he believed is no more after the visit of a WB external panel to assess the investigation by Bangladesh’s anti-graft watchdog.
He also said the WB has reengaged considering the importance of such a big project.
Muhith informed that another WB team will visit Bangladesh next month to see the progress of handling the corruption allegation in Padma bridge project.
He also shared his experience on the Padma bridge project funding and release of second instalment of International Monetary Fund-loan that he gathered from recently concluded annual general meeting of the World Bank in Tokyo.
