In response to numerous media queries on World Bank team's visit regarding Padma bridge project, the statement was issued today quoting the WB Bangladesh Country Director Ellen Goldstein.
"The World Bank recently took a decision to engage anew in the Padma bridge project. To that end, the World Bank will be fielding two missions in the near future," the statement said.
"One mission will introduce an external panel of eminent anti-corruption experts to begin assessing the fullness and fairness of the Bangladeshi investigation into evidence of corruption under the Padma bridge project. In conjunction with this assessment, the second mission will collaborate with our co-financiers in modifying the project implementation arrangements to ensure greater oversight of procurement processes," it added.
"The World Bank is currently coordinating the schedules of the mission members, and we hope to welcome them to Bangladesh in the course of this month," the statement added.
Earlier, the World Bank has postponed sending a team which had been scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today to formulate a framework of new arrangements to implement the Padma bridge project.
In a statement on Wednesday, the WB for the second time reminded the government that it would finance the project if the implementation of all the measures it asked for is satisfactory.
The statement came five days after the global lender announced its re-engagement in the project and just one day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made some remarks in New York on WB's return to the project.
The WB cancelled its $1.2 billion credit for the Padma bridge project in June, saying it had proof of a corruption conspiracy involving Bangladeshi officials, executives of a Canadian firm and private individuals.
