Wild elephants kill 3 in Cox's Bazar

Wednesday, August 15, 2012Three persons were trampled to death and at least 11 injured as wild elephants went berserk and barged into a locality in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar Wednesday morning.
The herd of elephant also crushed at least 10 houses, reports a correspondent from Cox’s Bazar.
The deceased were identified as Amena Khatun, 28, wife of Abdul Hamid; Md Shahjahan, 30, son of Rashid Ahmed; and Ali Ahmed, 50 of Dochori village in the upazila.
Of the injured, six were admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital and Ramu Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition.
The injured said that a herd of eight to ten wild elephants entered Dochori village around 5:00am and ransacked 10 houses.
Three people died on the spot while the scared villagers fled their homes.
After visiting the site around noon, MA Khalek, forest officer of Cox’s Bazar division, said, “A herd of wild elephants entered the village in the morning. Ramu police and the forest department fired seven to eight blank shots and managed to send those back to forest.”
Nazibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ramu Police Station, said the villagers returned to their homes after 2:00pm.
