PM pays homage to Bangabandhu

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing a floral wreath at his portrait at Bangabandhu Bhaban on Dhanmondi Road No. 32 Wednesday morning on the occasion of his 37th martyrdom anniversary.
On this fateful day in 1975, Bangabandhu and most of his family members were killed in this house by a group of disgruntled army officers as part of a long-run conspiracy of the anti- liberation forces. The day is being observed as the national mourning day.
After placing the wreath, the prime minister, also the eldest daughter of the Father of the Nation, stood in solemn silence in front of the portrait for some time. Munajat was also offered seeking eternal peace of Bangabandhu and martyrs of August 15, BSS reports.
Cabinet members, PM's advisors, parliament members, chiefs of three services, senior leaders of ruling Awami League and 14- party combine and senior government officials were present at that time.
Later, the prime minister, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, placed a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu on behalf of her party.
Senior party leaders Matia Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed and Suranjit Sengupta were present, among others, on the occasion.
Leaders of the 14-party combine Dilip Barua, Hasanul Haque Inu and Rashed Khan followed the prime minister to pay their wreaths at Bangabandhu's portrait.
Later, the prime minister visited Banani graveyard in the city and paid homage to her mother Bangamata Fazilatun Nesa Mujib, her brother Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal, Sheikh Russell and other martyrs of August 15.
The premier is due to visit Tungipara later today to pay floral wreath at the mazar of Bangabandhu where the great leader has been laid to eternal rest.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, who paid his rich tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, mentioned that a taskforce has already formed to bring back the fugitive killers and some of the countries have also been identified for giving shelter to them.
But they cannot be extradited as the countries, which have abolished the death penalty, are trying to hide the killers," he said.
After placing wreath at Bangabandhu's portrait, Barrister Amirul Islam said that Bangladesh government can lobby the United Nations for extradition of the Bangabandhu's fugitive killers.
"But the problem must be resolved through bilateral discussion with the countries where the killers have taken shelter," he said.
