Saturday, August 25, 2012 Vehicular movements on the Dhaka-Tangail highway came to a halt on 50 kilometres from Chandra of Gazipur to Karatia of Tangail Sadar upazila for 16 hours till Saturday morning due to heavy pressure of vehicles and frequent speed breakers on the highway.
The passengers, who were returning to Dhaka from northern districts after celebrating Eid with their near and dear ones, faced untold sufferings following the traffic jam, reports our Tangail correspondent.
Hundreds of vehicles got stuck on the highway from around 6:00pm Friday as a huge number of buses left northern districts for Dhaka at a time, said Sanowar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Gorai Highway Police Station.
But the traffic started to move very slowly around 10:00am today, the OC said.
While talking to the correspondent around 2:00pm, AKM Hafiz Akter, superintendent of police (SP) in Tangail, confirmed that the transport movement on the highway became normal.
He however said the traffic jam was created as a number of vehicles broke down on the highway.
Fearing severe traffic congestion in the night, the SP said, "We have preparation to tackle the situation."
There is a level crossing at Dherua in Mirzapur and at least 30 speed breakers over a distance of 45 kms on the highway from Elenga to Mirzapur upazila of Tangail, which are the other reasons behind the traffic congestion.
Additional traffic police have been posted on the highway to ease the vehicular movement.
Jisan Ahmed, a passenger of a bus who was returning to Dhaka from Puthia upazila of Rajshahi along with his family members, said they left Rajshahi around 10:30pm Friday.
“We suppose to reach Dhaka by 4:30am today but our bus still stuck at Dherua in Mirzapur,” he told the reporters around 7:00am.
“Our bus got stranded at Natiapara, Pakulla, Dhalla, Mirzapur and Dherua on Dhaka-Tangail highway due to the tailback,” he added.
