Wednesday, August 8, 2012 The High Court on Wednesday quashed a defamation case against Syeda Rizwana Hasan, chief executive of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), and her lawyer Iqbal Kabir Lytton.
Abdur Rouf Chowdhury, manager of ship breaking company Mak Group, filed the case with Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Court in 2010.
The case was filed against the duo after Bela served a legal notice on the government involving Mak Group on charge of exporting toxic ship ignoring an HC order.
Bela issued the legal notice in September 2010 cautioning the government and Mak Group not to take any move to export toxic ship from the country.
The Mak Group manager in the case brought charges against the accused of damaging his company's image and dignity.
After getting bail from the High Court, Rizwana and Lytton filed a petition the court on January 24, 2011 for quashing the case filed against them.
The HC on that day issued a rule upon the government and the plaintiff of the case to explain why the case should not be quashed. The court also stayed the proceedings of the case.
After holding hearing on the rule, the HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Farid Ahmed scrap the case today.
