Dhaka, Aug 9 A senior BNP leader on Thursday said the Home Minister's advice for the holidaymakers to lock down houses and shops before leaving Dhaka for the Eid vacation was 'frightening'.
"It is our question, 'if the locks are to be relied upon, why do you have to be Home Minister'?" Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain commented at a discussion in the National Press Club.
After a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday, Shahara Khatun told reporters that those leaving Dhaka for the Eid vacation should ensure that they properly locked their houses and shops.
"They should also have their own security arrangement for this period," she said.
Criticising her remarks, Mosharraf said, "The minister's advice is frightening. Her remarks prove the government has completely failed to maintain law and order and provide security to the people."
He asked Shahara to 'resign immediately'. "There is nothing to be afraid of. If you resign, the Prime Minister will call you a patriot," he said, referring to Sheikh Hasina calling Syed Abul Hossain a patriot after the former communication minister stood down amid allegations of corruption in the Padma bridge project.
Mosharraf alleged that the ruling Awami League supporters were behind the 'extensive extortion' on the roads and highways ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
The former minister, who was speaking at the discussion on 'Prevention of Terrorism and Corruption in the Education Sector', alleged that deadlock and violence were being 'introduced at the education institutions in a planned way to destroy the future generations'.
He said, "There is no way to overcome this situation other than forcing the government out."
