'Secure homes, shops before holiday'

Dhaka, Aug 8 Home Minister Shahara Khatun on Wednesday urged holidaymakers to take security measures on their own and to lock down houses and shops before leaving Dhaka for the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation.

"Many people will be leaving Dhaka during the Eid vacation. A lot of security concerns are there during that time. The government has taken security measures to this end," she told reporters following a meeting over 'security measures during Eid holiday' at the Secretariat.
"At the same time, those who are leaving Dhaka should ensure that they properly locked their houses and shops. They should also have their own security arrangement for that period."
State Minister for Home Shamsul Hoque Tuku, Home Secretary C Q K Mustaq Ahmed, Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker and FBCCI director Mohammad Helal Uddin were present at the time.
The country is going to see the highest number of public holidays in August this year on account Eid-ul-Fitr festival and other public and national holidays. The government officials and employees are set to enjoy an eight-day non-stop break from work from Aug 15 to 21.
According to government calendar, the Eid-ul Fitr is on Aug 20, but it would be finalised on the sighting of moon. However, due to the holidays for Janmashtami, Shab-e-Qadr, National Mourning Day on Aug 15, even if the Eid falls on Aug 18-19, most Dhaka residents would be leaving the capital for their vacations on Thursday.
Also, according to the official holiday list, government employees would be able to enjoy a 12-day holiday if they can take leave from Aug 12-14, which means Dhaka would be empty for a long period.
