Saturday, August 25, 2012 Doctors of all public and private hospitals across the country started a two-hour work abstention on Saturday protesting the murder of Narayan Chandra Dutta Nitai, a doctor of the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH).
As per the programme declared by Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), physicians of all government and private hospitals will observe the strike between 11:00am and 1:00pm on Saturday and Sunday, said Bashir Ahmed, medical superintendent of the NIDCH.
But the NIDCH doctors went on a work abstention from 8:00am to 2:30pm today and tomorrow, the medical superintendent told The Daily Star.
All the doctors wore black badges protesting the murder.
BMA leaders declared the programmes after Nitai, assistant professor of the NIDCH, was stabbed to death by unknown criminals at his quarters in the hospital compound at Mohakhali in the capital early Thursday.
The 47-year-old physician was also an executive councillor of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and a central committee member of Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad.
Emergency services at the hospitals would be out in purview of this work abstention.
Police are yet to identify the killers of Doctor Narayan Chandra Dutta Nitai but they assume that he was a victim of robbery. Nitai's relatives, however, claim that it was a murder.
Lucky Datta, wife of Nitai, claimed that unknown criminals had been threatening her husband over recruitments at the NIDCH.
A case filed in connection with the killing of Nitai has been handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of police for investigation.
Police has so far picked up four people in connection with the killing.
