Saturday, August 11, 2012 Thirteen people were killed and six injured by lightning inside a mosque in Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj Friday night, police confirmed Saturday morning.
Earlier, Md Bayes Alam, officer-in-charge of Dharmapasha Police Station, had confirmed 10 deaths, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
A lightning struck the victims when they were coming out of a mosque just after offering Tarabih prayers at Saraswatipur village in the upazila around 9:30pm.
Of the deceased, 10 died on the spot while three succumbed to their injuries at Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex.
The dead persons were identified as Sahabuddin, imam of the mosque; and devotees -- Nurul Islam, Nazrul Islam, Abdul Gafur, Abdus Salam, Manik Miah, Badsha Miah, Hazrat Ali, Muslemin, Ripon, Anwar Hossain, Taher Ali and Nur Islam.
The victims were laid to eternal rest at a local graveyard following their namaz-e-janaza after Zohr prayers.
Meanwhile, district administration announced Tk 20,000 for the families of each deceased persons and Tk 3,000 for each injured, said Md Shahidul Islam, upazila nirbahi officer of Dharmapasha.
The injured were undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.
Bordering village Saraswatipur is a remote locality in the vast haor area, the OC said, adding that waterway is the only means of communication with Dharmapasha Sadar upazila.
