"They (BNP-led four-party coalition alliance that won the polls) had wanted to wipe Awami League off in 2001. At the same time, they wanted to make people belonging to minority communities disappear," said Hasina.
She made the comment as Hindu leaders called on her at her official residence Ganabhaban on Tuesday on the occasion of Janmashtami, the birthday of Shri Krishna, which falls on Thursday.
"Everybody has to be cautious so that those terrible days do not come back," said Hasina as she referred to what she said was 'political repression' on her party activists.
"We want everyone to enjoy their right to religion. Communal discord should have no place (in society)," Hasina continued. "We want to build a Bangladesh free of hunger and poverty after ensuring communal harmony and democratic atmosphere."
"We have begun implementing the Vested Property Act. We are ensuring that it is implemented at the right time," she added.
She also discussed the trial of suspected war criminals and the obstacles the government is facing in ensuring this trial.
Religious Affairs Minister Shahjahan Miah, a Sector Commander of War of Independence CR Datta, Awami League Presidium Member Satish Chandra Roy and leaders of National Puja Celebration Committee were present at the meeting.
